Several weeks ago, a story was published in The New Republic. Written by one Scott Thomas Beauchamp.
It was about some things he has supposedly seen in a DFAC in Iraq, some incidents that took place and US soldiers being the guilty party.
Hmm, soldier shittting on comrades? Not for me. Don't like it,never will.
Anyone with sense will agree, war is ugly. Bad things happen, but so do many good things. In this case, I am not going to talk about the good, but rather at the end of this post, provide you with some links to read about it for yourself.
Beauchamp alleged that some soldiers purposely made fun of a disfigured female contractor.
“Man, I can’t eat like this,” he said.
“Like what?” I said. “Chow hall food getting to you?”
“No--with that f---ing freak behind us!” he exclaimed, loud enough for not only her to hear us, but everyone at the surrounding tables. I looked over at the woman, and she was intently staring into each forkful of food before it entered her half-melted mouth.
“Are you kidding? I think she’s f---ing hot!” I blurted out.
“What?” said my friend, half-smiling.
“Yeah man,” I continued. “I love chicks that have been intimate--with IEDs.”
This is a direct quote from his "story." Many other blogs have picked up this story...to include Hugh Hewitt, Free Republic, Blackfive and more. I know that most former military folk would never believe such tripe. It is my opinion that comrades in arms and especially those at war would ever have made a nasty statement such as that, having seen what it can do to people in general- you know, only maim or kill, right? Not only did that not happen in Iraq, but in Kuwait at Camp Buehring. The likelihood that he had even seen combat at that time seems slim!! Well The new Republic where the story was originally published said they rigorously fact-checked the story. I don't think so. They also claim that the Army's internal investigation shut them down from putting anything new up. And, the perpetrator himself came out to stand by his story with his full name. Big deal. The end result after all this is that he still lied. He set out to defame troops while he was fighting a war he didn't believe in. Read this from Confederate Yankee (

It becomes apparent that Beauchamp was a liar. Why, if it were indeed true, would not one person in that unit stand up to back him? I would have called that SOB out the second he even made a joke about it. Realistically, that could one day be him some callous basturd would make a remark over, and not one of his own comrades, either.
That being said, lack of journalistic integrity created a stir over at one of my favorite blogs, Blackfive.net. The discussion was centered on journalistic slants, lack fact-checks,etc...of none of which can be ascribed to Blackfive. Columbia Journal Review took the initiative to slam milblogs and effectively ticked one Laughing Wolf off. (He is the lone Civilian over at B5). He did indeed issue a challenge and it was accepted and it seems that Paul McCleary accepted. http://www.blackfive.net/main/2007/08/challenge-accep.html#comments
Hooah! Now here's your chance to support Laughing Wolf. Far all that is right and good, in my opinion. Don't forget to mark it!!
